A recent experience at the West Philadelphia center illustrates what that approach can look like.

When a new patient arrived experiencing significant lower abdominal pain and unable to urinate for nearly 24 hours, Dr. Waqas Salam and the center’s care team quickly stepped in. Center Clinical Manager Traniqua Williams and Care Promoter Kalisha Jones worked alongside Dr. Salam to provide immediate relief while making sure the patient felt comfortable, heard, and respected.

However, addressing the immediate problem was only the beginning. When the patient returned the following day with recurring symptoms, the team continued investigating what could be causing the issue. A thorough review of her medications revealed a possible culprit: a prescription from an outside specialist that can make urination difficult.

The team worked with the patient to address the medication issue and continued following her progress. At a subsequent visit, her pain was gone, and her condition had improved enough to remove the catheter that had temporarily been needed.

She continued doing well without requiring an additional specialist visit.

It is the kind of outcome that comes from looking beyond the immediate symptom and asking a bigger question: What does this patient need to stay well?
